Peaks Island Community Garden

WHEREAS locally produced food helps alleviate economic stress, reduces carbon footprint, and offers enhanced flavor and nutrition; and
Whereas there is no public land on Peaks Island currently used for growing food; and
Whereas the Peaks Environmental Action Team (PEAT) wishes to commence building such a garden, with plots assigned to a mix of senior citizens, schoolchildren, and island residents; and
Whereas several experienced island gardeners will lend their expertise toward making such a garden a successful one; and
Whereas the land for the garden will be temporarily leased from the City for this purpose; and
Whereas the land's soil will be improved, and the garden and surrounding area will become a natural and even more attractive gathering place for islanders; and
Whereas good, sustainable community gardening practices will be encouraged, and with minimum disturbance to the area surrounding the garden; and
Whereas such a project has an immediate and ongoing benefit to the island community;
BE IT RESOLVED that the Peaks Island Council hereby supports the establishment of a community garden for small-scale family gardening on Peaks Island.
